Bloggs,
Being that I’m the photographer and not the writer I though that I’d let Charles refute your post that states that our information is incorrect. I had read the statement that you quoted somewhere on the web, Wikipedia I think, but is now gone. Here is Charles Maynards response to your post:
“Thank you for your comment on the age of the mountains. It is true that there are mountains with older rock. It must be remembered that mountain building (orogeny) is different than the process which makes the rocks which are later made into mountains. For instance, there are rocks in the Blue Ridge that date from 1.8 billion years to 800 million years old. However, the mountains themselves were not formed until about 350 million years ago. There are ranges of similar age in other places on the earth. The Urals in Russia are an example. The Blue Ridge, if not the absolute oldest mountains on earth, are certainly among the oldest. However, it is the mountain building that dates them not the content of the rock. For instance, the Himalayas are still rising but are made of ancient rock. As I state on Page 61 in the essay entitled “Life Abundant,” “geologists count the Blue Ridge among the oldest mountains in the world.” It is definitely difficult to say for certain since there are so many ways to date stone and mountains. It just shows that you can continue to learn about this marvelous ancient earth all the time. Again thanks for your comments.” Charles.

The book looks Great, Jerry, but the information is incorrect – At over 1 billion years of age, the Blue Ridge mountains are among the oldest mountains in the United States and sometimes mistaken to be the oldest mountains in the world (in fact they are only about one third of the age of South Africa’s Barberton greenstone belt. At 3.6 billion years of age the Barberton greenstone belt are generally accepted to be the oldest mountains on Earth). Western Australia also has older although not very high mountains. But he.. 1 billion years is certainly ancient… just less ancient than others, Cheers.. Bloggs
